People moves: new role for SG CIB’s Cartier, LCH rates head departs, BNP Paribas’s Akbay joins Goldman, and more

Societe Generale Corporate & Investment Banking has appointed Sylvain Cartier as head of fixed income and currencies within market activities. Cartier will be based in Paris and report to global markets head Jean-François Grégoire when the position takes effect in the third quarter.
Cartier has been head of global markets for the Americas since November 2017. In his new role, he will work to enhance the profitability of rates, credit and currencies activities by refocusing on cashflow and flow derivatives.
Hatem Mustapha will replace Cartier as head of global markets for the Americas. Previously, Mustapha was head of equities and equity derivatives for the Americas. He will remain in New York, and report to Americas chief executive Slawomir Krupa and to Jean-François Grégoire. Mustapha joined the French bank in 2000.
Michael Davie, head of rates at LCH Group, will leave the clearing house later this year to pursue “personal goals” and spend more time with his family, according to an internal memo. He is expected to depart formally in September.
Davie first joined LCH as chief executive of SwapClear in 2010, after spending roughly two decades at JP Morgan. He spent five years at the clearing house before moving to the London Stock Exchange Group as head of rates services in late 2015, where he helped nurture its majority-owned listed derivatives platform, CurveGlobal, as chairman.
Davie returned to LCH full time as global head of rates in 2017, while remaining as chairman of CurveGlobal. He has been a vocal advocate for London’s continued role as the home of European rates clearing post-Brexit, fighting LCH’s corner.
Bruce Kellaway, global head of RepoClear, EquityClear and collateral, will take on Davie’s role in an expanded remit. He will become head of rates, securities and collateral on July 1. Kellaway has worked at LCH since 2014, and spent more than two decades at Lloyds Banking Group.
Will Vogel has left Societe Generale for a portfolio manager position at SPX Asset Management. Vogel served as head of foreign exchange options trading for Central Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He started at the French bank in 2016, having previously worked at Deutsche Bank, Lehman Brothers, Standard Chartered and UniCredit.
Fatos Akbay left BNP Paribas earlier this year to join Goldman Sachs as a managing director, focusing on European rates structuring. She joined the French bank in 2008, and most recently served as head of inflation and rates structuring in Europe, according to LinkedIn. Based in London, she will start at Goldman in late summer and report to Thalia Chryssikou.
Laurent Paulhac has joined financial technology startup Say as chief executive. Paulhac was most recently global head of client relationship management at TP Icap. He has been the chief executive of two startups, which he sold to CME Group and Sungard, respectively.
Rob Gambi has joined BNP Paribas Asset Management as global head of investments and a member of the executive committee. He leaves Henderson Global Investors, where he was chief investment officer. Gambi’s asset management career spans more than 30 years and includes a senior management position at UBS Global Asset Management. In his new role, he will oversee management teams across asset classes, and report to director and chief executive officer Frédéric Janbon.
Meanwhile, Grégory Taïeb has joined BNP Paribas Asset Management as an investment specialist within its multi-asset, quantitative and solutions investment group. Based in Paris, he will report to Jean-Philippe Olivier, head of the investment specialists team. Taïeb moves from Robeco, where he held the same title. He began his career at State Street.
HSBC has hired Cameron ‘Buck’ Rogers as chief information security officer, from the Bank of England. He will serve on HSBC’s group management board and report to chief risk officer Marc Moses. Rogers spent more than a decade at the UK’s Ministry of Defence, following a 15-year career in the Royal Navy.
Former Goldman Sachs chief risk officer Craig Broderick has been appointed as chair of Credit Benchmark’s newly formed advisory board, which will provide guidance on the financial data and analytics company’s market strategy and position. He retired from Goldman in January 2018, after working there for 32 years, most recently as chief revenue officer.
Broderick received the 2019 lifetime achievement award from Risk.net in recognition of his part in the firm’s response to the financial crisis.
Dan Aksan has joined Morgan Stanley as a managing director in charge of hedge fund and global real-money sales in Europe. He joins from Citigroup, where he was head of G10 rates hedge funds sales, according to his LinkedIn page.
Romain Laprade has joined the bank as a euro swaps trader from Goldman Sachs.
James Marsden has been promoted to head of electronic forex quant trading at NatWest Markets, based in London, from his previous role as head of electronic forex trading for Apac. Marsden joined the bank in 2007, when it was known as RBS, as a vice-president of quant solutions. Earlier, he was a vice-president of research at Pareto Asset Management between 2000 and 2007, according to LinkedIn. Marsden began his new role in April.
Millennium Partners has hired John Carrion as a fixed-income portfolio manager. Carrion spent more than a decade at Deutsche Bank before leaving in June 2018, Risk.net understands. He most recently served as a senior trader, focusing on rates and currencies. Earlier, he spent 16 years trading currencies at JP Morgan.
Richard Deutsch has joined Amundi Asset Management in London as head of credit research, fixed income. He reports to Eric Brard, head of fixed income. Deutsch spent eight years as global head of credit research at HSBC Global Asset Management. Previously, he held positions at Bank of America, BNP Paribas and Merrill Lynch.
The London Metal Exchange has announced the appointment of Gay Huey Evans as chairman of the board, replacing Brian Bender, who is retiring in December. Evans serves as a non-executive director of Bank Itau BBA, ConocoPhillips and Standard Chartered. She has worked in finance for more than 30 years, holding roles at Barclays Capital, Citi, the Financial Services Authority and the International Swaps and Derivatives Association.
Ben Covey has been appointed as head of private banking at Santander UK, reporting to Charlotte Platts, head of wealth. Covey previously served as divisional manager for south west and central at Santander Private Banking. Prior to that, he worked at Barclays Wealth.
James Crowley has been appointed as chief executive of BNY Mellon’s Pershing from his current role of chief operating officer. Crowley takes over from Lisa Dolly, who will serve as chairman from July until the year-end. He will report to Todd Gibbons, vice-chairman and chief executive for clearing, markets and client management. Crowley has held various roles during his 35 years at Pershing, including chief relationship officer.
Suzanne Cain has joined Janus Henderson Investors as global head of distribution and marketing, to lead institutional and retail global sales and product strategy. Cain joins from BlackRock, where she was most recently global head of institutional clients for iShares. Her previous posts include head of credit sales for Europe and the Middle East at Morgan Stanley, and head of structured credit and structured finance sales at Deutsche Bank. In her new role, Cain will be based in Denver and serve as a member of the executive committee.
Linda Huber has joined MSCI as chief financial officer and treasurer, taking the place of interim chief financial officer (CFO) and treasurer Andrew Wiechmann, who will now serve in the newly created position of chief strategy officer. Huber was Moody’s Corporation CFO between 2005 and June 2018. Before a career spanning more than three decades in financial services, Huber held the rank of captain in the US Army. She will serve on MSCI’s executive committee.
Yves Stein has been appointed as chief executive officer of Edmond de Rothschild (Europe), replacing Bernard Coucke, who is leaving to “focus on new projects”. Stein was previously an independent adviser to financial institutions from 2018.
David Hatton has joined EuroCCP as chief technology officer, from his former position of product owner for the FX Option Migration Project at Commerzbank. He will report to EuroCCP chief executive Cécile Nagel. Hatton takes over from Albert-Jan Huizing, who is stepping down at the end of June, having worked for the European equities clearing house since its formation in 2007. Earlier, Hatton held positions at LCH and CDSClear.
OpenFin has hired Tim Dinsdale as European chief technology officer. Dinsdale joins from Goldman Sachs, where he was a managing director. He will be responsible for expanding the firm’s London-based development team, and report to president and chief operating officer Chuck Doerr. Before entering the finance industry in 2003, Dinsdale worked in the gaming industry as a software engineer.
Phil Wagstaff has joined Jupiter Asset Management as global head of distribution. Wagstaff most recently worked at Janus Henderson, where he held the same title. His career in the fund management industry spans nearly 30 years. Wagstaff replaces Nick Ring, who is leaving to “pursue other executive opportunities”, and he will also serve as a member of the executive committee.
Meanwhile, the asset manager has announced that Wayne Mepham will become chief financial officer (CFO) in September, after leaving his position as global head of finance at Schroders. Mepham, who will serve on the board and executive committee, is replacing Charlotte Jones, who took the CFO position at RSA Insurance.
Allianz Global Investors has appointed Beatrix Anton-Grönemeyer in the newly created role of chief sustainability officer, reporting to chief executive Andreas Utermann. She was previously global head of product specialists fixed income.
The firm has also expanded its sustainability research team by hiring Marie Navarre from Amundi as senior SRI analyst. Based in Paris, she will report to Isabel Reuss, director of SRI research.
Thomas Hanson has joined Kames Capital as head of the high-yield fixed-income team in Edinburgh. Hanson joins from Janus Henderson Investors, where he was a high-yield credit portfolio manager. Earlier, he worked at Aerion Fund Management and Lazard Asset Management.
The asset manager also announced the hire of Eleanor Price as a high-yield analyst. Price joins from Baillie Gifford, where she was an investment manager on the high-yield team.
The appointments come as high-yield co-manager Jack Holmes leaves Kames Capital for a role on Artemis Investment Management’s fixed income team. He will join in late June.
The Carlyle Group has announced two internal moves. Ruulke Bagijn has been promoted to head of investment solutions, the firm’s business segment that builds private equity and real-estate portfolios. Bagijn was previously co-head of AlpInvest Partners’ primary fund investments team. She replaces Lauren Dillard, who joined Nasdaq as head of global information services. Bagijn has worked at Axa Investment Managers – Real Assets and PGGM, the Dutch pension manager.
Erica Herberg is also joining the investment solutions business as a managing director and chief financial officer, from the global credit segment, where she held the same title. Herberg has worked at The Carlyle Group for nearly 20 years and will replace Paul de Klerk.
Mick Sweeney has joined PineBridge Investments as chief executive of its Irish business. Sweeney will be based in Dublin and report to European head Klaus Schuster. He moves from Bank of Ireland Wealth Management, where he was chief executive.
Pimco has hired Richard Thaler as senior adviser on retirement and behavioural economics. Thaler, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2017, is a co-founder and partner at Fuller & Thaler Asset Management. He will help Pimco to “better understand human behaviour and how it impacts decision-making”.
