“Without the past, there is no future” – the origin of that phrase may seem unclear, but there is a lot of truth in it. So, let’s take a look at the past – ie, the origins of non-financial risk. Non-financial risk as a term is fairly new; having conducted some research on where it first appeared, it seems that it was not even banks or other financial services firms that started using it. A more likely explanation is that corporates began to label those risks that are not dealt with by the chief finance officer (as these firms didn’t, and still mostly don’t have, a dedicated chief risk officer) as “non-financial”. Sadly, the term is grossly misleading – as demonstrated in several chapters of this book, the financial damage caused by non-financial risks is huge, and in many cases exceeds the losses incurred by write-down on loans and other financial risk.

Hence, it makes sense to look at what corporates are doing in that domain, often dubbed “enterprise risk management”. Banks and insurance companies tend to be very proud of their level of sophistication in risk management.
