French, UK banks have largest trading portfolios in Europe

Fair value and HFT assets concentrated among biggest banks

Trading assets and those held at fair value are concentrated among the largest European banks, in particular French, UK and Nordic lenders, data from the EU-wide transparency exercise shows.

Across the 118 banks that disclosed a breakdown of their assets by accounting classification, the median firm designated just 2% as trading assets, and a further 6% at fair value as of end-2019.

But larger firms had much higher percentages. Those in the fourth quartile of the distribution by size had 12%
