EU alternative funds hold €17bn of CLOs

Over 50% of AIF exposures concentrated in top 20 funds

Alternative investment funds' (AIFs) exposures to collateralised loan obligations (CLOs) hit €17 billion ($19 billion) as of 2017, according to a report by the European Securities and Markets Authority (Esma).

AIFs also have exposures of €71 billion to leveraged loans. In total, the combined exposures are spread across over 500 AIFs, with a total net asset value (NAV) of €475 billion.
