Risk USA: Regulators need to be wary of capital overshoot, says Roldán

Adding to Basel III capital levels might have unintended consequences, says former chair of Basel Committee’s standards implementation group

National regulators should be cautious about requiring their banks to hold additional capital beyond what has been recommended by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, according to José María Roldán, director-general of banking regulation at the Banco de España and until recently chair of the Basel Committee's standards implementation group (SIG).

Speaking at the Risk USA conference in New York this morning, Roldán warned local regulators risked overshooting on capital requirements –
