Brexit negotiations could still result in a unique free-trade agreement covering the cross-border provision of financial services, according to Kay Swinburne, a member of the European Parliament (MEP).

But that could come at a cost to other third-country regimes – potentially forcing them to adhere to European standards in order to strike their own free-trade agreements with the UK.

Swinburne’s vision matches that of UK chancellor Philip Hammond –
