Italy’s economy may be struggling to generate any growth this year, but the picture for asset prices – at least until October’s global market wobbles – has been surprisingly positive.

Bond yields have been falling, with the 10-year government bond hitting a historic low of 2.25% in early September, while the equity market – for the first half of the year at least – rallied strongly, with Italy’s benchmark FTSE MIB index climbing 17.6% between 1 January and its peak on 10 June.
