So far, the Nordic region has weathered the European sovereign debt crisis without too many scrapes. And, as the Nordic Risk 2010 derivatives rankings reveal, this is one reason why competition between banks – in and out of the region – is as hot as ever. When things get a bit hairy, Swedes are fond of a quirky saying: “the cow is not on the ice”. In other words: don’t worry, things aren’t that bad. It would make a decent motto for Nordic markets this year. While cows have been crashing through the ice all round the Continent, the northernmost corner of Europe remains relatively calm and upbeat.
