People: SG Americas appoints chief culture and conduct officer
Nancy Harrington Jones is promoted; Cheri McGuire joins Standard Chartered as CISO; Penny Judd exits Nomura
Societe Generale has promoted a senior human resources executive to the post of chief culture and conduct officer in the Americas. The role has been newly created "to secure a safe, sound and profitable business that will inspire long-lasting, confident relationships with our clients, peers and employees", according to a statement.
Nancy Harrington Jones previously served as New York-based head of human resources for the Americas at the French bank. Before she took up her current position in 2007, she served as global director for Societe Generale's human resources for the IT division in Paris.
In her new role, which she began on May 3, Harrington Jones will continue to be based in New York and report to Slawomir Krupa, chief executive of Societe Generale Americas.
The appointment highlights the increasing importance banks are attaching to conduct and culture in the wake of high-profile scandals such as the manipulation of Libor and foreign exchange rates. Over recent years, many banks have hired heads of conduct and strengthened their conduct risk programmes, although there remain big differences in the way firms handle this risk.
John Fitzgerald, who previously served as human resources manager of career advisory, compensation and recruitment, has been promoted to replace Harrington Jones as head of human resources for the Americas.
Standard Chartered has appointed Cheri McGuire (pictured) as chief information security officer (CISO). She is expected to take up the role in June, when she will also become a member of the bank's IT and operations management team.
McGuire joins Standard Chartered from US technology firm Symantec, where she had served as vice-president of government affairs and cyber security policy since 2010. She previously worked as director for critical infrastructure and cyber security in the ‘trustworthy computing' group at software giant Microsoft. Prior to that, she held various roles at the US Department of Homeland Security, including acting director and deputy director of the National Cyber Security Division.
McGuire replaces interim CISO Andy Wicks, who had held the post since former CISO, Justin Lister, moved into a new role in the bank's technology division. She will be based in London and report to Michael Gorriz, Standard Chartered's group chief information officer.
Steven Braudo has been named chief operating officer of Old Mutual Wealth, the wealth management arm of the UK financial services group.
Braudo will join the firm on June 1, subject to regulatory approval. He moves from Standard Bank Wealth, the wealth management unit of the South African bank, where he was chief executive.
Braudo has 23 years of experience in the South African financial services industry. Prior to his appointment as chief executive of Standard Bank Wealth in 2015, he worked at South African financial services firm Liberty Holdings. There, he served as deputy chief executive of Liberty Holdings and chief executive of Liberty's insurance division, Liberty Life.
At Old Mutual Wealth, Braudo replaces Paul Penney, who is set to leave the business later this year. In Braudo's new role, he will be based in London and report to chief executive Paul Feeney.
Penny Judd (pictured), head of compliance for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Nomura, is to leave the Japanese bank in the coming months.
Judd is leaving to pursue other opportunities, according to the bank.
Judd has a background in accountancy, regulation and corporate finance. She started her career as a chartered accountant with KPMG, before running the equity markets division at the UK Listing Authority and spending two years in the corporate finance division at Cazenove. She spent 10 years working as head of compliance for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at UBS before moving to Nomura.
A spokesperson for the bank says it has yet to appoint a replacement.
London-based trading firm XTX Markets has appointed Andrew Brand as head of operational risk.
Brand formerly worked in a similar position at merchant bank Close Brothers. Before that, he held various risk-related roles, including as senior risk consultant at risk vendor Chase Cooper and as enterprise risk manager at Threadneedle Investments.
Brand's role has been newly created at XTX Markets, which was set up in 2015 amid widespread cuts to banks' trading businesses. The firm aims to provide a source of non-bank liquidity in several asset classes, starting with foreign exchange.
In October last year, Zar Amrolia, former co-head of fixed income, currencies and commodities at Deutsche Bank, joined the firm as co-chief executive.
The Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (Acams) has appointed Samantha Sheen (pictured) as director of anti-money laundering (AML) for Europe.
Before joining Acams, Sheen was group head of AML at Italian bank UniCredit. She previously worked as group head of AML at Italian insurer Generali and served as the inaugural director of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission's financial crime division.
Sheen's role at Acams has been newly created in an attempt to broaden the organisation's reach across Europe. She will work closely with John Byrne, Washington, DC-based executive vice-president, and Rick McDonell, executive director, to provide education and training to AML and counter-terrorist financing professionals. She is based in London and reports to Angela Salter, head of Europe.
Andy Roth, the former chief privacy officer of US credit card firm American Express, has joined law firm Cooley as a partner in the privacy and data protection group.
Roth previously worked at law firm Dentons, where he was chairman of the privacy and cyber security group in New York. He specialises in advising on complex legal and operational issues raised by new technology.
At Cooley, Roth will remain in New York and will work closely with Michael Rhodes and Matthew Brown, co-chairs of the privacy and data protection group.
Abbey Sturrock (pictured) has joined risk consultancy and insurance broker Marsh as senior vice-president in the public agency group.
In the newly created role, Sturrock will be tasked with delivering Marsh's services to the public agency sector, including multilateral development banks and export credit agencies. She joins from Berne Union, a UK-based association of public and private export credit and investment insurers, and previously worked as an underwriter for Export Development Canada, the Canadian export credit agency.
At Marsh, she is based in London and reports to Alistair McVeigh, UK head of the political risk and structured credit practice.
