Asia exchanges set for overhaul as competitiveness wanes

Recent high-profile outages on Asian exchanges have raised questions over the robustness of the region’s trading infrastructure. Is the solution greater competition or an increased spend on technology?

Capital markets and the trading infrastructure globally are in a transition period. Volumes are receding – equity volumes globally are down from $111 trillion in 2008 to $70 trillion in 2012, according to data from the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) – and exchanges are losing market share to private networks and alternative trading venues.

As global trading volumes decline, Asia capital markets are seeing relative growth. According to the WFE, there was a 15.4% rise in regional equity
