Basel discussion document will centre on internal measurement approach

Global banking regulators intend to issue in June or July a special discussion document on operational risk in the context of Basel II, the new capital adequacy accord proposed for large international banks from 2004.

Officials with the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which in effect regulates international banking, confirmed this to Operational Risk in March. But they declined to go into details at this stage.

Bankers and other regulatory sources say the paper is likely to deal mostly with technical questions arising from the internal measurement approach to calculating an op risk capital charge under Basel II.

The document will not call for comment from the industry as such. Instead it’s likely
