Prebon closes emissions desk

US-based energy brokerage Prebon Energy has decided to close its emissions desk. But some in the nascent emissions market say the move is premature and are optimistic as to the future development of emissions trading.

Prebon president Ed Novak said in a statement: “Given current market conditions, we have decided to focus our energies in other areas where we believe we can offer value to our customers, including – but not limited to – the natural gas and electricity market.”

Meanwhile, other brokerage firms appear to be building up their emissions capabilities. In October, US broker Refco joined the Chicago Mercantile Exchange as a charter member, and UK energy broker Spectron launched an online trading platform for European environmental markets.
