Regulators grow confident about Basel II calendar

Global banking regulators were expected to issue an upbeat statement in mid-July on progress with the controversial Basel II bank accord after several months of uncertainty in which some bankers doubted the accord would ever see the light of day.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the architect of Basel II and the body that in effect regulates international banking, was expected to give details of progress with the complex, risk-based accord. The pact will determine how much capital major banks must set aside as a cushion against the risks of banking including, for the first time, operational risk.

The statement, which was to be made at the end of the Basel Committee’s quarterly meeting in Basel, Switzerland, would reflect
