Energy firms awarded UK offshore sites

Ten wind farm sites with a potential to generate a total of six gigawatts (GW) of electricity have been allocated to nine energy companies and consortia by the UK's Crown Estate.

The 10 'exclusivity agreements', all off the coast of Scotland, are designed to allow developers to begin initial survey and consultation processes for the sites while a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is completed for offshore wind within Scottish territorial waters.

Following completion of the SEA, The Crown Estate can then award agreements for lease for suitable sites. Construction may begin once permission has been gained from the Scottish Government.

The largest single planned project is Scottish Power Renewables' 1.5GW Argyll Array. Other significant planned farms include the 920 megawatt (MW) Beatrice project, a joint venture between Airtricity and SeaEnergy Renewables, and the 905MW Inch Cape farm, a joint venture between SeaEnergy and Npower Renewables.
