Energy Risk Awards 2019: The winners
BP and Engie pick up two awards each, while BNP Paribas takes the coveted derivatives house of the year
Never a place for the faint-hearted, commodity markets underwent exceptional price volatility towards the end of last year, increasing the need for market makers and liquidity providers to facilitate risk management and hedging for energy producers and users.
Environmental markets went from strength to strength as energy providers, users and investors position themselves for the energy transition and consider the impact that the low-carbon economy will have on energy demand and business models. This year we introduced an environmental products award to reflect the increased efforts in this direction. This year’s inaugural winner, Element Markets, has been in the emissions trading sector for many years, but has now expanded into wider environmental markets and is carrying out large-scale environmental compliance for firms, bringing about emissions reduction in the most cost-effective way.
Digitisation is another major talking point among C-Suite energy executives currently as all firms grapple with how to harness the latest new technologies, such as blockchain and artificial intelligence, to advance their businesses. As well as recognising excellence in the core commodity trading and risk management software space – a category won this year by Ion Allegro – these awards include a technology house of the year category to mark some of the newer developments. This year this category was won by Eka Software Solutions.
Sticking with technological innovation, our innovation of the year award goes to enmacc for its over-the-counter trading platform, which is disrupting the way things have been done for years in the European power markets. And our newcomer of the year award goes to E.on Portfolio Services for the innovative new hedging and advisory offering it is bringing to its clients.
Here is the list of winners. Full write-ups are being released between May 15 and June 14.
