Barclays Capital (BarCap) was formed in 1986, although the build out of its commodities business only began in earnest in 2000. Since then the bank has become the main challenger to the established market-leading duo of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Over the years BarCap has played a vital role across global commodity markets, from UK power, which it began trading in 2002, to the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme, in which it has traded nearly two billion tonnes of carbon credits.
