Record Q1 for cat bonds as pension funds increase capacity

First quarter 2012 most active first quarter ever, say market participants

The first quarter of 2012 proved to be the most active first quarter for catastrophe bonds in the history of the market, with pension funds and other institutional investors increasing their exposure to the sector.

Cat bond issuance reached $1.49 billion (£867 million) during the first three months of the year, according to figures from Aon Benfield, the reinsurance intermediary. The record result follows an encouraging fourth quarter in 2011, during which $1.99 billion of cat bonds were issued
